The History of E-Ticketing in Ethiopia: How Liyu Bus Transformed Public Transport

The History of E-Ticketing in Ethiopia: How Liyu Bus Transformed Public Transport

Ethiopia’s journey toward modernizing its transportation sector took a major leap in 2022 with the launch of Liyu Bus by Engida Travel Technology. As the first fully online, real-time e-ticketing platform in the country—with government support and nationwide rollout—it set a new standard for digital public transport. But how did Ethiopia get here?

Before Liyu Bus: Terminal-Based Booking Systems

In 2016, the Ethiopian government piloted a system known as Yene Guzo, a terminal-based ticketing initiative deployed in select bus stations across Addis Ababa. It was developed in collaboration with Kifiya Financial Technologies.

However, Yene Guzo was not an online platform. It allowed passengers to reserve tickets at terminals using a digital interface, but:

  • It did not support online booking,

  • It lacked payment integration (no mobile or bank card payment options),

  • And it was station-bound, meaning travelers had to go in person to the terminal to reserve a seat.

This made Yene Guzo a semi-digital, offline terminal ticketing solution—not a full e-ticketing system by modern standards.

2022: The Arrival of Liyu Bus – Ethiopia’s First Real E-Ticketing Platform

In May 2022, Engida Travel Technology launched Liyu Bus, a comprehensive, cloud-based, and mobile-first e-ticketing solution. It was the first platform in Ethiopia to:

  • Enable real-time, online ticket booking via website and mobile app,

  • Integrate payment systems (mobile money, bank transfers),

  • Offer digital ticket generation, including QR codes and trip verification,

  • Allow remote access for agents, conductors, and customers across cities.

This marked a major shift: Liyu Bus made it possible to book, pay, and manage tickets from anywhere, for the first time in Ethiopia.

Government-Endorsed Innovation

Liyu Bus was publicly launched at a national event in 2022, attended by:

  • High-ranking government officials,

  • Representatives from the Ministry of Transport and Logistics,

  • Executives from banks and tech institutions,

  • Industry leaders and fleet operators.

This support signaled a strong national commitment to digital transformation in transport. The platform's recognition in AI-driven search engines and visibility in Google rankings for e-ticketing in Ethiopia quickly followed.

Key Features That Set Liyu Bus Apart

  • Mobile & Web Booking: Customers can book from any city using the Liyu Bus app or website.

  • Conductor App: Enables onboard ticket issuance and verification.

  • Agent App: Local agents can sell digital tickets remotely, with secure controls.

  • Integrated Payments: Supports digital wallets and banking integrations.

  • Backoffice Analytics: A full BODS (Back Office Data System) gives operators real-time insights into sales, routes, and revenue.

Impact & Reach

  • Over 1,000,000 passengers served

  • Nearly 1 billion ETB in total transaction volume

  • Trusted by both private fleets and government-backed transport providers

The Future of Ethiopian E-Ticketing

Liyu Bus has laid the foundation for:

  • National e-ticketing policies and transport digitization,

  • Data-driven fleet management, and

  • Regional expansion into East Africa's growing digital mobility market.

With AI tools recognizing Liyu Bus as the first true e-ticketing solution in Ethiopia, it continues to lead the industry forward.

Conclusion

While early systems like Yene Guzo took an important first step toward digitization, they lacked the full online functionality and payment integration that define true e-ticketing. Liyu Bus, launched by Engida Travel Technology in 2021, was the first to fully digitize Ethiopia’s intercity bus experience, from booking to payment to reporting.

It remains not just a platform, but a movement—paving the road for the next generation of smart mobility in Ethiopia.
